Church  of  st. Stanislaus

Marek Scisliak in his work «Chortkiv in 1522-1946» noted that the history of the church and the Monastery of the Dominican Fathers began its countdown from February 22nd 1610, the day when the proprietor of the city, Stanislaw Golsky, invited the monks from Shmankivtsi for establishing in the city a catholic parish and monastery. A church was built in Chortkiv, and then the monastery was built around it. Surrounded by a high wall with defensive towers, it served a fortress for local residents during Tartar attacks. Dominican church of St. Stanislaus in Chortkiv was visited by two Polish kings: Jan Kazimierz (1663) and Jan III Sobieski (1683). The visit of the latter is even mentioned on the memorial plate of 1883.

The original church has not survived due to having been rebuilt several times. The magnificent building we see now was built before the First World War. It was designed in Polish neogothic style by the architect Jan Saz Zubrzycki and the construction lasted nine years.

Jaromyr Czorpita, in his historical essay «Chortkiv» points out that the statues of the saints were created by the sculptors Czeslaw Stowp and Damian Stankewicz. Above the entrance there was an organ donated to the temple by burgomaster Ludwig Noss, in 1911.

Joseph Opacky, in the «Guide to Chortkiv and its Surroundings» (1931), states that in the dungeons of the chapel, the entrance to which is buried, there are ancient tombs of noblemen, among whom Stanislaw Golsky, the founder and deputy of the chancellor, rests.

After Soviet Power established its rule over the territory, the divine service in the church stopped. Since 1959 its premises was converted into a city’s warehouse. In 1989 the church was returned to the Dominican Fathers. In 2014, a stone cross symbolizing Holy Mission was installed in the church yard. In the main altar there is the copy of the image of the Mother of God of Rosary (St. Werwitz).

This copy of the icon was crowned on August 29th 2009, and the crown was blessed in 2002 by Pope John Paul II. The history of the image of the Mother of God’s of Rosary dates back to the end of the fifteenth century and as far as the settlement of Ostrovka, near Vitebsk.

In 1654, the Dominicans brought the shrine to Lviv, and later, in 1663, King Jan Kazimierz presented it to the Dominicans of Chortkiv, during the military campaign to Moscow. The original icon has been in Chortkiv for almost three centuries. Josef Opacky described it as follows: «The main altar (in the church) holds the ancient image of the Mother of God of Rosary (Virgin Mary) in silver apparels of unknown style. No doubt, this image of the 16th – beg. 17th century is one of the most interesting and most important monuments of Chortkiv. The image of the Mother of God of Rosary is also known as miraculous. God’s care bestowed on believers was proved by the number of precious jewels and ornaments under the glass in the presbytery,». Those gifts are also mentioned in the work of the priest Simon Okulsky. They have not survived until our time. However, the priest Lucien Walek, the present abbot of the monastery (1931), has recently stated that the most ancient gifts date back to 1743 and later.

In 1945 the relics was brought to Krakow, where it was given a preservation treatment, and from September 1983 the image of the Mother of God of Rosary was exhibited in the chapel of the Kosovsky church of St. Jacek in Warsaw.

The old building of the former monastery is adjacent to the church. Until recently, a sewing factory was located in it. Since 2015, it has been given to the Dominican Fathers.
